BASIS Demands Immediate Digitization of Tax System for Increased Revenue Collection
Prior to the announcement of National Budget for 2013-14, BASIS has demanded immediate implementation of digitization of Tax System of the country. BASIS has put forward specific suggestions in this regard during a ?Meet the Press? program on May 4 at BASIS Auditorium. The event was chaired by Fahim Mashroor, President BASIS.
BASIS leaders said that the current government is under pressure for revenue collection. In the current year, the actual collection of revenue is going to be much less (around 10% less) that the target. In the next year also, given the economic slowdown, it will be difficult for government to collect enough revenue for maintaining the national development priorities. BASIS said that through massive digitization process, Government and NBR could enhance the revenue collection without increasing the tax rate.
BASIS put forward specific suggestions in this regard. They include ? Mandatory automation for VAT management for large VAT paying businesses, Online TIN registration and return submission for Income tax, implementation of Central data processing system in NBR.
BASIS president also raised concern that despite current government?s commitment for Digital Bangladesh, because of some vested groups within NBR and some unethical business communities different digitization initiatives of NBR are not being implemented in good pace and sometimes blocked for implementation. BASIS requests Government to expedite the process of digitization.
The event was attended by ShameemAhsan, Senior Vice President, BASIS, Russell T Ahmed, Secretary General, BASIS and Rafiqul Islam Rowly, Habibullah N Karim and MahboobZaman, former Presidents of BASIS and Journalists from various print and electronic media.
