BASIS has organized for the 4th time NASA Space Apps Challenge in 9 Cities (Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal and Comilla) of Bangladesh. For the 1st time Bangladeshi teams have placed  themselves into the Top 4 in 2 (two) categories of NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018. Among 2729 Projects from 79 countries, Bangladesh has clinched top 4 spots in ‘Best Use of Data’ and ‘Best Use of Hardware’ category. Today NASA has announced the result in their official website.

Last year, 2 (two) Bangladesh projects have secured places in Top 10 of People’s Choice Award. But for the first time, 2 Bangladeshi Projects have been able to place themselves in main challenge categories.

In Best Use of Data Category ‘Team Olik’ from Sylhet has secured their place along with the teams from California, Kuala Lumpur and Yamaguchi, Japan. Team Olik became Champion from Sylhet Division in this year’s National Hack-a-Thon in Bangladesh.

Team Olik’s have made a VR application. Using this application user can experience the NASA lunar landing site in virtual reality. This Lunar VR Project intends to provide experience in virtual reality. It is portable and educative at the same time.

On the other hand, Team Planet Kit from Dhaka secured Top 4 spot along with a team from Rosario, Argentina, Perth, Australia and Taipei. Team Planet Kit secured Runners-up position from Dhaka in the national Hack-a-Thon of NASA Space Apps 2018.

Team Planet Kit have prepared a device which will have the necessary equipment to carry out several lab tests which are crucial to detecting bio-signatures in Mars. It will also help the survivals to determine the weather & soil condition, water detection. Those data will help them to sustain their life in mars & produce their own foods.

This year from 19-20 October Top 40 teams participated in 36 hours long Hack-a-Thon at Independent University, Bangladesh. Out of these 40 teams, 8 were nominated for International Challenge. Among those 2(two) have made it to Top 4!

Champions name from each category will be announced in February, 2019. Champion teams from 6(six) categories will get the chance to go to NASA and work as interns in NASA’s project.
